Fire Escape Plan

The best way to ensure everyone in your home escapes safely, in case of fire, is to have a plan. It's so important to practice the plan and make sure that everyone, especially small children, understand what to do in case a fire starts in your home.

Most people, who die from a house fire, fall unconscious from the smoke and toxic fumes. Sometimes people are asleep and are found later in bed, never having been aware of the fire. But many escape the fire only to re-enter the home looking for other family members.

Remember fire drills in school? There is a good reason that we had to practice them several times per year. The brain will access the drill memory in times of emergency and allow you to act calmly. Panic interferes with our ability to reason. When the alarm sounded you got up calmly, walked calmly to the door and met outside with your teacher, where she counted everyone to make sure everyone escaped safely.

Home fire drills should be the same. Follow these simple steps and then practice at least every three months, more often with small children. Quiz the kids to make sure they understand.

Create an escape route for every room. If you have more than one story, put safety ladders in rooms upstairs. Make sure windows are operational and that children know how to open them. Show everyone in the home which exit to use depending on where the fire might be. More than one escape route will be necessary for each room. Your local fire department will help you make a plan if you need assistance.

Put everyone in bed, sound the alarm and make sure everyone meets at the specific location that you choose. If children would be likely to help each other in an actual emergency, have them practice that. If you have elderly, disabled, infants or toddlers, they will need assistance. Assign someone to help them escape safely.

Once outside, have a special place, away from the house that everyone will meet. Make sure it's understood, that once you escape you stay at the meeting place. It's important to share with children that once they reach the safe place to stay there, no matter what. Impress on everyone that they should never go back in.

Most fire deaths are caused by people re-entering the home looking for others and then succumbing to the smoke and toxic fumes.

With a monitored smoke detector, help will already be on the way. If you don't have a monitored smoke detector, go to a neighbor and call the authorities.

It's also important to go over kitchen fire safety. A small fire extinguisher should be located in the kitchen and all family members should know how to use it. Most kitchen fires are greasy and water does not put it out. Check the fire extinguisher each year to make sure it works. They do have a shelf life.

The basic home alarm system can assist you to get help in case of a kitchen fire. Just push the fire button on the keypad and the monitoring station will send help. Teach small children which button to push, so they can react in an emergency.
