Fire Safety and Prevention

Do you have an emergency fire plan? Most people don't. They know they should, but they don't take the time to actually create one with their families.

Today is the day to put that plan into effect. It's simple, just follow these few steps and you can check this off your "To Do List".

1. Get your family together and draw a floor plan of your home, marking all doors and windows. Show two ways out of each room in case smoke or flames block your main route. Check to make sure each window is operational and can be opened by everyone in the family.

2. If you must go through smoke to escape, crawl low on your hands and knees under the smoke where the air is cleaner and cooler.

3. Choose a location outside your home that everyone can meet if there is an emergency and you need to leave the house. Make sure everyone knows to stay there until everyone else is there. Don't go back into the house looking for others. Let the authorities do that.

4. Test non-monitored smoke detectors and replace batteries each year. Add
   monitored smoke and heat detectors to your home security system for extra protection.

5. Practice your plan at least twice a year.

6. Make sure babysitters, caretakers, and overnight guests know your plan.

Now, keep your plan with your important papers and pencil in your practice run two times this year. Be safe.
